The designation recognizes and promotes support to post-secondary maritime training programs that prepare students for careers in the maritime industry.

The Department of ½ûÂþÌìÌÃland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) anticipates funding the University of ½ûÂþÌìÌÃAnchorage (UAA) $46 million over the next ten years to lead a consortium of U.S. academic institutions and partners for the newly established Arctic Domain Awareness Center (ADAC)-ARCTIC Center of Excellence (COE) for ½ûÂþÌìÌÃland Security in the Arctic.
