UA celebrates National Native American and ½ûÂþÌìÌÃNative Heritage Month

This month, the University of ½ûÂþÌìÌÃpays tribute to the rich ancestry and traditions of Indigenous people by celebrating National Native American and ½ûÂþÌìÌÃNative Heritage Month. In October, the ½ûÂþÌìÌÃLegislature permanently established November as ½ûÂþÌìÌÃNative Heritage Month. House Bill 126 was signed into law during a meeting of the ½ûÂþÌìÌÃNative Brotherhood/½ûÂþÌìÌÃNative Sisterhood Grand Camp at ½ûÂþÌìÌÃPacific University.

UA Scholars class of 2020 celebrated at receptions across Alaska

The University of ½ûÂþÌìÌÃheld five receptions across the state to honor the Class of 2020 UA Scholars. "The UA Scholars program is Alaska's way of investing in our best and brightest students so that they will continue their educational journey at the University of Alaska," said Lael Oldmixon, director of the UA Scholars program. "The scholarship program gives students options for studying at any of UA's campuses and universities, or participating in an exchange program abroad. Their options are limitless."

FY21 budget includes funding for UAA and UAA athletic programs

University of ½ûÂþÌìÌÃathletics will continue unchanged next season. "It was stated and affirmed that we would have athletics at UAA and UAF," said Keith Champagne, UAF Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Athletics. "Same sports as this year, same everything. We're optimistic that we have the support of the Board of Regents to move forward with athletics into the future."

½ûÂþÌìÌÃ529 announces 2019 scholarship account winner

A lucky Soldotna woman received an early birthday surprise-- a $25,000 scholarship. Marta Taylor thought that she was having lunch with her husband and daughter at Froso's Family Dining to celebrate her birthday. She didn't know that Lael Oldmixon and Buffy Kuiper from ½ûÂþÌìÌÃ529 (formerly the UA College Savings Plan) had flown down from Fairbanks and were waiting to surprise her with a giant check and a birthday cake.

½ûÂþÌìÌÃLegislature honors UAA WWAMI professors

The 31st ½ûÂþÌìÌÃLegislature recently honored University of ½ûÂþÌìÌÃAnchorage professors Max Kullberg, Ph.D. and Holly Martinson, Ph.D. for their ground-breaking medical research and for teaching the next generation of medical students and undergraduate students in Alaska.

The University of ½ûÂþÌìÌÃBoard of Regents concluded a two-day meeting, including a work session focused on clarifying roles and responsibilities across the UA system. The board adopted a $277 million state operating budget request but delayed a vote on increasing student tuition for academic year 2021 pending further engagement with student leaders.

University of ½ûÂþÌìÌÃrenames University House to honor Grace Schaible

The University House has been renamed the Schaible House to celebrate the legacy of one of UA's most outstanding alumni, Grace Berg Schaible. Through her quiet philanthropy and dedication to improving the quality of life for Alaskans, Grace Schaible created a legacy that inspires a culture of giving in Alaska. As one of Alaska's most influential philanthropists, Grace gave both her time and resources to non-profits across the state, including serving on UA Foundation Board of Directors (1986-2017 Emeritus) and the UA Board of Regents (1985-1987).

Accrediting Agency Responds to University Board of Regents, President, Chancellors

In a letter dated Nov. 1, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), told University of ½ûÂþÌìÌÃleaders that they are on the right path toward clarifying leadership roles and responsibilities and creating opportunities for increased participation in university decision making.

Opportunity for Board of Regents public testimony on Nov. 8

Alaskans will have an opportunity later this month month to comment directly to the Board of Regents on issues facing the University of Alaska. In-person public testimony will be held on the second day of the Board of Regents full board meeting from 8-9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8. The meeting will be held in Room 109 of the Butrovich Building on the University of ½ûÂþÌìÌÃFairbanks campus. The Board of Regents full board meeting will be Nov. 7-8 in Fairbanks.

UA Scholars celebrate the class of 2020 at five events across Alaska

Each fall, the University of ½ûÂþÌìÌÃholds receptions across the state to honor the incoming class of UA Scholars. The Class of 2020 from the Fairbanks North Star Borough were celebrated on Oct. 29 at the University of ½ûÂþÌìÌÃFairbanks.
